Spill the Beans
If you’re waiting for someone to “spill the beans,” you are waiting for them to reveal a secret, especially inadvertently. The common phrase originates from the Ancient Greek practice of using beans to vote for candidates entering various organizations. Each candidate would have one assigned container that was placed before the voting members. The voters would then place a white bean in the container if they voted for the candidate and a black one if they did not approve of them. Sometimes a clumsy voting member would accidentally knock over the jar, spilling all of the beans and letting everyone see the ‘confidential’ votes.
