Go Cold Turkey
To go cold turkey is to quit something abruptly, as opposed to slowly weaning yourself off of it. The origin of “cold turkey” is not entirely certain, but the phrase seems to have evolved from the older 19th century American idiom “to talk turkey,” which meant “to speak directly and frankly, without beating around the bush.” The phrase came to be used most commonly in the context of quitting a drug addiction all at once because, during an addict’s withdrawal, their skin became translucent, hard to the touch, and covered with goose bumps – like the skin of a plucked turkey.
