Give the Cold Shoulder
To give the cold shoulder is to express dismissal or disregard towards another person. The expression is interesting because, although giving someone the cold shoulder today is has a negative connotation, it was actually regarded as a civilized and polite gesture in medieval England. After a feast, hosts would politely signal to the guests it was time to leave by providing them with a slice of cold meat from the shoulder of beef, mutton, or pork.
