Cat got your Tongue?
This phrase is commonly said to a person who is at a loss for words. The saying has two possible origins. The first refers to the English Navy’s use use of a whip called “Cat-o’-nine-tails” for flogging. The pain inflicted was so severe to the victims, that it left them speechless for a long time. The other likely origin is said to come from ancient Egypt, where it was common practice to cut out the tongues of liars and blasphemers and feed them to the cats.
